 Antonio UnderwoodAfter many years as a sideman to many of the great luminaries in the field of jazz, Antonio Underwood has come out with two full recordings that feature
the tuba as the lead voice.

The compositions and arrangements highlight the unique sound of the tuba. The Tuba CD's are entitled, "Tuba Mirum" and "They Call Him. Antonio"

Antonio has been a featured member of the two-time Grammy Award winning McCoy Tyner All-Star Big Band, featuring such artists as: Dee Dee Bridgewater, Savion Glover, Diane Reeves, and Slide Hampton, etc.

He began his career as a tuba performer playing in NYC clubs back in 1979 (Lush Life, Sweet Basil's, Village Gate, The Vanguard, the Greenwich House, The Public Theatre, Alternate Museum, Manhattan lofts, Soloist at
Brass Conferences, NYC) and festivals (JVC, South Seaport, etc.) at the age of nineteen.

In addition to featured performances with Historic Jazz Legend and McArthur Genius Award Recipient, The Late Max Roach, Tony is featured on stage with Jazz performers Christian McBride, Latin Percussion Jazz Legend Jerry Gonzalez, Famed arranger Bob Belden, Jazz Trombonist Julius Preister, Jazz Saxophonist Joshua Redman, Legendary Jazz Guitarist Paul Motian, Innovative Jazz Pianist Cecil Taylor, Legendary Jazz Trumpeter,
The late Lester Bowie, Band Leader and Jazz Bassist Charlie Haden, Jazz Trombone Legend Steve Turre, Trumpet Legend Virgil Jones, Jazz Saxophonist, The Late John Stubblefield, Joe Lavano, Howard Johnson, Jazz Tuba Pioneer, The Late Ray Draper, Jazz Pianist and Legendary Composer Muhal Abrahams, Premiere Jazz Violinist / Violist, The Late Leroy Jenkins, Founder of the World Saxophone Quartet,Saxophonist,The Late Julius Hemphill, Henry Threadgill, Guggenheim Fellow, Saxophonist David

Tony has been a cast member of Juan Darien by Academy Award Composer Elliot Goldenthal and Tony Award Winning Director Julie Taymor, a regular in the Tony Award Winning play, Jelly's Last Jam, featuring the late Gregory Hines, Other performances include Off-Broadway
on stage performances of "One Mo' Time" and "Further Mo'".

As a composer, Tony, a scholar to the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program at USC, studied extensively with the late Dr. Norman "Buddy" Baker, Elmer Bernstein, Joe Harnell, and David Raksin. At Yale
University he studied composition and theory at the graduate level with, Joan Panetti, Willie Ruff, Arthur Weisberg, Michael Freidman, and Maury Yeston.

Tony's composition, orchestration, and/or producing credits include recordings by Be Be Winans (Atlantic Records), Terry Dexter (Warner Bros.), John Purcell (Pony Canyon), The World Saxophone Quartet (Justin
Time Records), Anthony Montgomery (Universal/Germany), etc. Brass quartets are published by TAP Music (Iowa USA), and Jazz compositions published by ENJA Music, Germany. Tony publishes works for Tone East Music and owns NuSure Music (ASCAP).

Film scoring credits included: Rumbling of the Earth (Filmmakers Library), Shadows of the Dead (Horizon Entertainment/First Look Entertainment.), and The Incredible Dyke (Independent).
